First version of QuickTime is a multimedia add-on (System Software). It was released on December 2, 1991. Bruce Leak (lead
developer), ran the first version at the WDC(Worldwide Developers Conference) on May 1991. He played famous 1984 TV
commercial on an Apple Mac.
QuickTime 1.x was released in 1992.
It was only a subset of the full QuickTime API, including only movie playback fuctions driven through the standard movie controller.
QuickTime 2.x was released in February 1994.
It added support for music tracks.
QuickTime 3.x was released in 1998.
It added support for graphics importer components.
QuickTime 4.x was released in 1999.
It added support for QDesign Music 2 and MPEG-1 Layer 3 audio.
QuickTime 5.x was released in 2001.
It added support MPEG-1 playback for Windows, and updated MPEG-1 Layer 3 audio support for all systems.
QuickTime 6.x was released in 2002.
It added support for Flash 5, JPEG 2000, and improved Exif handling.
QuickTime 7.x was released in 2005.
It added support for An H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec, Quartz Composer (.qtz) animations.
